With summer here, sunshine and outdoor activities bring new challenges to eye health. Brittani Carver-Schemper, O.D., shares these tips for protecting your eyes this season.
Shield Your Eyes from UV Rays
UV exposure can cause cataracts, macular degeneration, and photokeratitis (sunburned eyes). Choose sunglasses with 100% UVA, UVB, and UVC protection, wear a hat with a 3-inch brim, and seek shade when possible.
Be Careful with Sunscreen Around the Eyes
Sunscreen is essential, but be cautious near your eyes. Mineral-based sunscreen is gentler and won’t sting if it runs. If sunscreen gets in your eyes, rinse with artificial tears, eyewash, or distilled water.
Keep Artificial Tears Handy
Dry eyes are common in summer due to wind, heat, and humidity. Preservative-free artificial tears can soothe irritation and keep your eyes moist.
Limit Time in Front of Fans
Fans and air conditioning can worsen dryness, especially for those prone to dry eyes.
Avoid directing airflow towards your face to prevent irritation.
Treat Seasonal Eye Allergies
Summer allergies often lead to red, itchy, and watery eyes. Consult with a healthcare provider to explore options like eye drops, OTC allergy medications, or cold compresses.
Wear Protective Eyewear for Yard Work
Nearly half of all eye injuries happen at home, often during yard work.
Use protective goggles to prevent injuries while gardening or mowing.
Use Goggles While Swimming
Pools, lakes, and rivers can cause eye irritation and introduce harmful bacteria, especially if you wear contact lenses.
Use goggles to shield your eyes, and avoid wearing contacts in natural water.
Follow these tips to keep your eyes healthy all summer long!
